Our First Rookie Gala!
On Sunday 8th October we invited Bovey Life Saving Club and Okehampton Otters to us for our first Rookie Life Saving Festival. We had a fun afternoon of life saving based races to include towing a manikin, rope relays, throwing rescues, body boarding and a rescue tube relay to name a few. Pupils from our Survive and Save group who are working towards their young leader or assistant life saving instructor qualification assisted with the starting races, time keeping and setting up each race. Everyone had an enjoyable time and the friendly competition was a great experience for all involved.

Survive and Save take to the Sea!
As part of the Survive and Save Beach Award, we took our group to Summerleaze beach to try out their rescue skills and to learn about Beach Safety. Parents and instructors were amazed at how brave the children were as in true ‘Devon weather style’ it was not the calmest of evenings! The sea was very rough and wavy and as we arrived the lifeboat was being launched on a rescue mission! However, we managed to find a calm part of the beach and pictured below and right are our brave Life Savers practising their skills! Well done Everyone!
The Summer Holidays were very busy with children achieving distance awards, taking part in mermaid swims, aqua zumba and some very popular life saving classes. Based on water safety, personal survival and Rookie Life guard skills we held some little life saver classes for 5 to 8 year olds and life saving, first aid and CPR for 8 years and upwards.
Here are some photos to round up our summer activities:
End of Term Success!
The end of term saw a lot of badges and certificates awarded to children for their hard work. These included many STA learn to swim awards and distances up to 100 metres for our younger swimmers.
Two of of our aquatic assistants also achieved their National Pool Lifeguard Qualification alongside some of our older swim club members. Luke, Jasmine, Heidi and Alex all passed the qualification as well as gaining their first aid at work certificate and AED certificate.
Well done everyone!
Festival First Aid
Three of our Survive and Save Lifesavers went to the Lapstock Festival at Lapford at the end of the month to work as part of the first aid team. Emma Q, Emma K and Jade had the opportunity to spend the day on duty as first aiders patrolling the festival and assisting with a few minor injuries.

Bovey Rookie Festival
This month our Rookies entered the Life Saving Competition at Bovey Tracey. It was a well organised, fun day and to top it off the sun was shining. Our year 5/6 team came in 6th place with the points being very close and our Year 3 team came in 2nd place and received a Silver Medal each. We were really impressed with how well the children worked as a team and everyone really enjoyed themselves.

May Half Term Week
We ran our usual activities this week, to include Mermaid and Merman swimming, fun sessions and a very successful distance day with children once more swimming some fantastic distances up to 5000 metres. Pictured opposite is Bethany with her 5000 metres badge and certificate. She had a bit of energy left to smile for the camera!
Another swimming year has ended, awards have been given out to the children for their achievements and we look forward to the start of another exciting year here at Aqua Stars. With ongoing development at the pool and new classes planned for the new year we hope that 2017 will be as successful as previous years.
Before the break for Christmas we held a distance day with children swimming amazing distances and our mermaid and merman session was our busiest yet with 35 children taking part. With the popularity of these sessions increasing each time, we are going to start our very own MerAwards in 2017 so children returning can aim for the next badge and certificate each time.
Merry Christmas everyone and we look forward to
seeing what we can all achieve next year!
Half term was a busy week kicked off by children swimming long distances of up to 5000 metres during our distance swimming day.
The following day we had a mermaid and merman swimming session which again was great fun and hard work to swim dolphin stroke for the whole session. There were some very tired children afterwards!
Achievements were running high over half term as the children who took part in the Intensive Swimming Course took their first steps to swimming unaided with some achieving their 5 metres award and others in the higher ability groups swimming their 25 metres award. The course ran for 4 mornings with children swimming for 45 minutes each session.
Our Summer Holidays have been jam packed with activities. Fantastic distances were achieved on our distance days, great fun was had during our snorkelling sessions and important life saving skills were learnt during our junior medic sessions.
This Summer saw our first Charity Day at Ruby Oak Park. Children raised money for the Children’s Hospice South West by taking part in a fun swimming gala, a life saving gala and a sponsored swim followed by a well earned barbeque after! We were joined by Potteny’s Patch, Pheonix Cards, Harley-
We raised a total of £1040.05
Mermaids and Mermen!
Our junior swimmers grew tails during the holidays and experienced swimming like a mermaid or a merman. With beautiful tails and monofins from Planet Mermaid, the children swam lengths, played games and had fun during these special sessions turning our pool into Ruby Oak Park’s own Mer-
In July, our life saving club took part in another life saving festival at Bovey Tracey Pool. It was a hot day and the competition against Bovey Tracey was tough but we were pleased to come away with more medals! We competed in relays to include rope pulling, torpedo rescues and life saving backstroke holding a rag doll in the air! The competition ended with a scenario where the life savers had to demonstrate working as a team to rescue multiple casualties. Here are the results:

We are in!
We have moved to the new pool at Ruby Oak Park! All lessons will take place here from now on.
It has been sad to leave the pool at Woodacott as we have many happy memories and have had 10 years of
lessons there but the opportunities we will be able to offer at Ruby Oak Park are really exciting.
We are awarded the RLSS Grant Shield!
Every year the Devon branch of the Royal Life Saving Society hold an awards ceremony, during which the top awarded club is presented with the Grant Shield. Aqua Stars Academy of Swimming awarded the highest number of qualifications in North Devon for the RLSS Life Saving awards and teaching certificates.
Lorraine Buttery, Devon Branch Awards Officer said “it gives me the greatest of pleasure to present the Grant shield to Laura Morrish and her team on behalf of the branch for the fine work and dedication shown in training and assessing so many young people”. Speaking aft the event Laura Morrish said “Wining the Grant Shield is really important to the team at Aqua Stars.
